When it comes to fireplaces, Zero Clearance, has taken on a wide range of meaning. There is the type of pre-fabricated highly insulated fireplace that can be installed within close range to combustible materials such as framework and walls without needing protection from a masonry structure. Plus, now there are the vent-less type of fireplace that can moved from room to room and placed wherever, without needing to worry about starting a house fire.
Pre-fabricated fireplaces continue to gain in popularity over the traditional masonry fireplace for a number of reasons. The main reasons being that they are easier, cheaper and much quicker to install. Add to this that they are much more energy efficient then the traditional masonry units. The new zero clearance units can be as high as 70% or more efficient. If you want a traditional look you can always enclose the unit in masonry framework and nobody would ever know the difference.
The other type includes the Ethanol fireplace, and the gel fireplace. There is a wide variety of models and looks in this type of fireplace. When considering an ethanol or gel fireplace as a zero clearance it would be one that is a complete unit that can be moved from room to room. These complete free standing fireplaces are most often enclosed in a fine wood cabinet, of a quality to be considered a fine piece of furniture. One of the nicest surprises that I ran across when looking into gel fireplaces was that there are wall mounted units. That's right, they make fireplace units that can be hung on a wall. Now that's what I would call "0" clearance.
There are some concerns by some people when it comes to this type of fireplace. If you do your homework and consider all the possible ramifications you should be fine.
